Valentine's Day Couple's Cooking Class in NYC

Wondering what to do for Valentine's Day next month? How about a fun and romantic couple's cooking class?

Forget the crowded restaurants and tired prix fixe menus! Surprise your sweetheart with a night at my Valentine's Day couple's cooking class featuring a menu of decadent recipes you'll both enjoy.

Open to a maximum of 6 couples, this intimate and completely hands-on cooking class in New York City will feature recipes based on the theme of "chocolate & spice." Taught in my signature "dinner party style," guests will sip wine and cocktails and share a selection of small bites, while working under my instruction to prepare the evening's dishes.

Once the food is ready, we'll all sit down to relax and enjoy the meal. At the end of the dinner, each couple will go home with an exclusive take-home goodie bag filled with sweet treats and small gifts to enjoy at home.

The menu for the evening was designed to highlight spicy flavors and chocolate--a classic Valentine's Day combination. Dishes include:

  • Hand-Twisted Black Pepper and Parmesan Cheese Straws
  • Handmade Chestnut Cocoa Gnocchi in a Brown Butter, Rosemary and Sage Sauce
  • Pan-Seared Wild Local Striped Sea Bass Fillet with Spicy Spanish Romesco Cream
  • Roasted Asparagus with Chile-spiked Aioli Dipping Sauce
  • Braised Winter Greens
  • Red Wine Chocolate Cake with Cinnamon Whipped Cream
  • Chocolate Balsamic Strawberries

The class will be held in Manhattan on Sunday, February 12 from 7PM to 10:30PM at the gorgeous City Cookhouse. A $250 all-inclusive fee per couple will cover instruction, materials, champagne, wine, and the complete five-course meal.  The class is limited to 6 couples, so sign up today to secure your spot!

Elegant Entertaining

I came across this stunning photo of model Mary Jane Russell in an elegant set of chinoiserie style silk hostess pajamas and turban. How fabulous would it be to host a casual, but chic, cocktail party (or perhaps even just one special guest) while outfitted in something like this?  I'm now determined to find myself a fabulous pair of hostess pajamas to lounge around and sip cocktails in.

On New Kitchens and Healthy Cooking

I can't believe that we're already just 10 days away from our first NYC cooking class of 2012! I'm really excited about this class in particular, as it's also going to be the first class I'll be teaching in a gorgeous new kitchen rental space here in Manhattan.

Called City Cookhouse, the spacious, modern, and fully-equipped kitchen was founded specifically to provide an affordable and fully certified space for new culinary entrepreneurs (like me!) to begin and develop their businesses. The space is also available for culinary events, cookbook parties, tapings, and more. Even better? A lot of the chefs that rent space there are also volunteering their time to offer free monthly cooking classes for children in the neighborhood!

The first class I'll be teaching at City Cookhouse is called Light & Delicious: Healthy Weeknight Cooking. In this class I'll be teaching 8 different "mix & match" recipes specifically designed for effortless weeknight cooking. Featuring fresh produce, whole grains, and lean proteins, the dishes are the kind that you can come home from work on a busy night and make without much fuss.

As part of the class, I'll be teaching simple techniques and swaps that everyone can use to "health-up" some of their favorite recipes. I'm also going to be teaching easy variations of each dish so you'll actually leave the class with way more than just 8 recipes under your belt.

And here's the kicker. As healthy as all these dishes are, they're also actually delicious. I mean, my blog is called Always Order Dessert--I'm serious when it comes to deliciousness. I'm not going to be teaching you anything weird. This isn't boring diet food. It's just good, wholesome, and nutritious. Heck, one of the recipes even has bacon in it!

Here's the incredible menu for the class (the class is totally hands-on, which means you'll get to help prepare ALL of these dishes, and then sit down to enjoy them together with your classmates). By the way, if you're looking to learn gluten-free cooking, ALL the recipes in this class are gluten-free!
  • Sauteed Kale with Cranberries, Almonds, and Caramelized Shallots
  • Golden Herbed Quinoa with Nuts, Seeds & Dried Fruits
  • 15-Minute Herb Pesto Salmon
  • Vegetarian Split Pea Soup with Smokey Garlic Yogurt Swirl
  • Roasted Chipotle Eggplant Spears
  • Crunchy Spiced Roasted Chickpeas
  • Maple Roasted Pears with Cinnamon Yogurt
  • Coconut Chia Seed Pudding

Sounds amazing, right? Click here to grab one of the few spots that are left.

The Food We Eat

I was reading some of my favorite blogs last night, when I came across this wonderful quote on Scandi Foodie. It's so true and so perfect, I had to share it. I think I may print this out and stick it to my refrigerator.

You Deserve Cashmere

Confession time: Are you more familiar with the labels inside your clothing or on your shampoo bottle, than the ones on the back of the food you eat? Do you spend more time figuring out what to wear to work than what to eat for lunch?

So often we eat without really thinking about it--even I, who live my life around food, am guilty of it on occasion. We may think about calories or taste or the atmosphere in the restaurant, but it often doesn't go much beyond that.

When I work with clients, one of the things that often comes up is just how much time we spend thinking about the quality of the items that touch and go ON our body. For example, our clothing, our skin lotions or foundation, those fluffy bath towels, the thread-count of our sheets, even the leather on our car seats! But yet, when it comes to the food that we put INTO our bodies, that same kind of care and consideration often goes out the window, falling into the category of a mere inconvenience or chore.

Part of it is that we're simply dealing with a mix of primal behaviors and routines. We eat because we're hungry and our bodies need it. We also eat because it's 8AM or noon or 7PM, and that's when we always eat.  It's a routine, a part of our lives, and at its root, a simple means of survival.  It doesn't help that the hungrier we get, the less we really want to think about it.

Unlike selecting a magazine to read or a dress for a party, it's something that HAS to happen and so we often reduce it to the most basic level of need. We're hungry, so we eat--usually whatever is quickest, easiest, and most readily available.

Unfortunately, what's perceived to be easiest isn't usually what's best.

But I think another part of it is a question of culture. There was a time when cooking, preparing daily meals, and selecting quality ingredients was expected to be part of our daily lives. For a long time, it was even the focus of each day for many women.

But times changed, we got busier, and technology and corporate culture evolved to the point where it no longer felt necessary because we could just as easily hire or pay someone else to feed us--whether by dining out, ordering in, or buying prepackaged meals that can be prepared in seconds.

The problem with these so-called "conveniences" is that very often, their reason for being is not to keep us healthy, strong, and feeling our best. Why? Because it's not their responsibility to do that; it is ours.

And yet for some reason, we don't fight it. If you were to come home from a store and find that the necklace you bought was a fake, or the sweater fell apart at the seams, you probably wouldn't stand for it. You'd take it back. You'd demand a refund. At the very least, you wouldn't shop there again.

But when it comes to food, we don't do that. We accept what we're given. We accept the claims on packages that a certain food is a "healthy choice" or "all natural." We eat mediocre Chinese takeout or microwaved Lean Cuisine meals night after night, knowing that it's not good, but not really doing anything about it. We don't take the time to learn how to cook easy weeknight dishes or prepare a few simple breakfasts. Why is that? Why don't we care as much about the inside of our bodies as we do the outsides?

I think it's possible to change this. I think it's possible to reach a point where we place just as much value on how we feel as we do on how we look (and where we realize just how connected those two are). I think it's possible to take back that control in a realistic way. There is no need to completely shun all conveniences (Lord knows I don't!),  but it is possible to make use of them in a responsible and conscientious way. This will begin with a change of mindset.

To begin with, we need to realize that the inside of our bodies DESERVE and NEED the good stuff just as much as the outside of our bodies.

I'm talking the really good stuff.

When it comes to picking what we eat, we need to be going for the sexy and so-good-for-you thousand thread-count, cashmere, Louboutin, Hermes of food, because THAT is what our bodies are really craving. (And note that I'm not talking about cost here--it's all about quality.) REAL food--fresh local fruits, full-fat yogurt, local farm eggs, raw milk cheeses, nutty whole grains, gorgeous grass-fed beef, etc.--will actually make you feel just as good on the inside as those silky sheets and cashmere coat feel on the outside. It's like wrapping yourself with the goods from the inside out.
What do you think? Are you ever guilty of spending more time deciding what to wear than what to eat? Would you rather spend more money on shoes than on groceries?

5 Easy Things You Can Do TODAY to Feel Instantly Refreshed

      1. Mix up a Batch of Spa Water
Few things are more refreshing than drinking a glass of ice cold water with a few slices of lemon, mint, and cucumber floating around in it. It's an easy way to make that plain glass of water taste better, and to encourage you to hydrate more, which in turn will help you de-bloat quickly, get rid of eye puffiness, reduce your appetite, and leaving feeling totally revitalized. To prepare, simply fill up an attractive pitcher or beverage dispenser and drop in one sliced cucumber, 1 sliced lemon, and a few sprigs of fresh mint. Keep this in the fridge at home or in your office, and make a goal to empty it by the end of the day.  (Added bonus? Cucumber, lemon, and mint all contain properties that will also help reduce bloat and flatten your belly.)

      2. Go to Sleep 20 Minutes Earlier Tonight
It may not seem like a lot at the end of a harried day, but those extra 20 minutes of sleep will absolutely make you feel healthier and more energized tomorrow morning, and throughout your day. Even if you can't get to sleep quickly, the mere act of laying quietly in a darkened room will help relax your mind and help you sleep deeper.

      3. Cross Something Quick Off Your To-Do List
Been meaning to schedule a dentist appointment? Have a few pairs of shoes you need to take in to get the heel tips replaced? Need to request a copy of an old invoice you lost? We all have a few nagging things on our to-do list that we put off for no real reason in particular (I, admittedly, have like 20 of these things), but taking the time to just do ONE of them, will help ease up the stress and perhaps even free up a little mental space so you can move forward and tackle the rest.

      4. Take a Walk Around the Block
Working inside all day can make you feel stuffy, tired, bored, and even sore. A bit of exercise can definitely help, but there is no need to go for anything complicated that involves you changing clothing, driving to the gym, or worrying about making it back in time. Just grab your coat, say you'll be right back, and take a walk around the block, your building, or even just the parking lot. It's just a couple minutes, but it will refresh you and keep you going for the rest of the day. Even better? Get a coworker to come along.

      5. Get Rid of Something You Don't Love
Physical clutter has a sneaky way of weighing down on us without even realizing it. There is a definite negative energy that arises when you find yourself surrounded by objects that you don't need or like. When I need a quick mental burst, the surest way is to pick a drawer or closet or cabinet or shelf, and just toss something. Pull out a sweater to donate, throw out a pile of old Christmas cards, or even take down a painting you never really enjoyed that much. Don't worry about how much it cost or if it was a gift--if you aren't crazy about it, just ditch it. A few weeks ago, I threw out everything that was on my refrigerator door--promotional magnets, store receipts, postcards, etc. I cleared off the entire door and was AMAZED by how much fresher and lighter everything suddenly felt.
